Abstract

Shallot is an important horticultural commodity in West Kalimantan, where production still needs to be increased, including through the utilization of peatland with its inherent limitations for crop growth. This study aimed to evaluate the responses of two shallot cultivars to wood ash and chicken manure application on peatland. The experiment was conducted for three months in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, using a factorial Completely Randomized Design with three factors: shallot cultivar (Bima Brebes and Bauji), wood ash at 5, 10, and 15 t ha?¹, and chicken manure at 10, 20, and 30 t ha?¹, with three replications. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by the honestly significant difference (HSD) test at the 5% significance level. The results showed a significant interaction between cultivar and wood ash on plant height and bulb weight loss. At 8 weeks after planting, the tallest plants (51.04 cm) were obtained from Bima Brebes treated with 15 t ha?¹ wood ash. A significant interaction between wood ash and chicken manure was also observed for plant height at 8 WAP, with the highest plant height (50.36 cm) obtained from 15 t ha?¹ wood ash combined with 30 t ha?¹ chicken manure. Independently, wood ash at 15 t ha?¹ produced 5.24 bulbs clump?¹ and an air-dried bulb weight of 17.74 g clump?¹, whereas chicken manure at 30 t ha?¹ produced 5.66 bulbs clump?¹ and an air-dried bulb weight of 18.67 g clump?¹. Fresh bulb weight at 20 t ha?¹ chicken manure (23.03 g clump?¹) was not significantly different from that at 30 t ha?¹ (25.67 g clump?¹). The lowest bulb weight loss (26.29%) was recorded in Bauji treated with 15 t ha?¹ wood ash.
